信州農(nóng)村的單身母親（飯?zhí)锏?飾）在紡織廠辛勞工作，以供養(yǎng)獨(dú)生子良助（葉山正雄 飾）上學(xué)。即將畢業(yè)的良助經(jīng)老師開導(dǎo)，決定繼續(xù)學(xué)業(yè)，然家境貧苦令其遲遲無法張口。了解到兒子的心情，為了讓他過上美滿的生活，母親決定無論如何也要將良助送入東京的大學(xué)?！ ∈隁q月倏忽而過，成年后的良助（日守新一 飾）從學(xué)校畢業(yè)，娶妻生子，在東京安定下來，母親則依舊留在信州農(nóng)村。滿懷希望的母親前往東京，卻發(fā)現(xiàn)當(dāng)初自己傾心培養(yǎng)的兒子只擔(dān)任夜班老師，收入微薄，過著清貧的生活……
